The term maxillo-facial orthopaedics can sound complex, but it simply refers to guiding the growth and development of the bones in the face and jaw. This approach helps improve jaw alignment and facial balance—and often reduces the need for tooth extractions.
Also known as:
Unlike traditional orthodontics, which usually start later and focus only on moving teeth (often after extractions), FJO begins earlier—often in childhood—when growth can still be influenced. By addressing jaw development as well as tooth position, this method can prevent crowding and promote more stable, natural alignment.
Early treatment can make a significant difference in long-term oral health, function, and appearance.
Book Online AppointmentFunctional Jaw Orthopaedics (FJO) is ideal for growing children who show signs of jaw misalignment or facial asymmetry. If a child’s bite is developing abnormally, it can lead to an unbalanced facial profile and long-term dental issues. FJO helps guide jaw growth at an early stage, supporting proper development and creating sufficient space for adult teeth—often reducing the need for extractions later.
At Marlow Dental Centre, treatment typically begins early, before all permanent teeth have erupted. The first phase involves wearing removable appliances for 18–24 months, which gently encourage proper jaw development. These are worn full-time, except while eating, brushing, or during contact sports.
Once adult teeth have fully come in, the second phase begins. This focuses on aligning the teeth using fixed braces for 12–18 months, helping to create a healthy, well-balanced bite and smile.
